Applies to: MiCo remote controller (Model ZZ-H-2-003) and VERSA
Also known as: MiCo single-hand remote controller
Compatible product: VERSA
Quick summary: Update MiCo in the HOVERAir app before first use. Hold MiCo with the button side up. Open the cover to power on, close it to power off. Pair with VERSA by holding both VERSA buttons for 3 seconds, then holding MiCo’s Up and Down buttons for 2 seconds. MiCo supports Follow mode, Manual mode, and Handheld mode.
Quick answer: What should I do first?
- Update MiCo firmware in the HOVERAir app.
- Charge MiCo with the USB-C cable.
- Hold MiCo with the button side up.
- Pair MiCo with VERSA.
- Choose a mode: Follow mode, Manual mode, or Handheld mode.
Before you start
Update MiCo’s firmware before you connect it to VERSA for the first time.
VERSA updates itself automatically when it is powered on. MiCo does not. You must start the update yourself in the app. A MiCo that has never been updated may not behave correctly, so please do this first.
How to update MiCo firmware
- Open the HOVERAir app on your phone and sign in.
- Tap your profile icon in the bottom-left corner.
- Scroll down and tap Version update.
- Tap MiCo update, then follow the on-screen steps.
Keep MiCo sufficiently charged during the update. Menu names follow the language currently selected in the app.
Do not close the cover or press any buttons until the app says the update is finished.
Meet MiCo
MiCo is a compact single-hand remote controller for VERSA.
- In Follow mode, MiCo flies VERSA for you and keeps your subject framed while you adjust the follow distance and camera angle.
- In Manual mode, you steer VERSA and the gimbal yourself.
- Used on its own, without VERSA, MiCo becomes a handheld camera remote for the gimbal and zoom.
How to hold MiCo
The button side must face up. Holding it the other way round blocks the antenna.
- Correct: Button side up. The antenna stays clear of your hand.
- Incorrect: Button side down. Your hand covers the antenna.
The antenna sits along the top edge of the upper cover, on the same side as the buttons. Holding MiCo with the button side down puts the antenna against your palm. This noticeably reduces the effective Bluetooth range.
If the connection drops or feels short, check how you are holding MiCo first.
Power on, power off, and standby
Power on
Open the cover.
Power off
Close the cover.
If MiCo does not respond, wait about 1 second after closing the cover before opening it again.
Battery level after power on
The status light shows the battery level:
- Green: Above 50%
- Yellow: Above 15%
- Red: Below 15%
MiCo cannot power on below 1% battery.
Standby
MiCo goes to standby when either of these happens:
- It is not connected to anything and you press no buttons for 1 minute.
- It is connected to VERSA but you do not shoot, fly, or send a control command for 3 minutes.
To wake MiCo, press any button except the 5-way button, or open and close the cover again.
Charge MiCo
Charge MiCo with the USB-C port on the lower cover. A full charge takes about 60 minutes from empty.
While MiCo is powered off:
- Breathing red, yellow, or green: Charging
- Solid green: Fully charged
- Fast flashing red: Alert — very low battery, abnormal temperature, or charging error
If it is a charging error, unplug the cable and reconnect it.
Pair MiCo with VERSA
The first time MiCo is used, it enters pairing mode automatically, pairs with any nearby powered-on VERSA, and announces “Paired with VERSA.”
It then remembers that VERSA and reconnects automatically the next time it is powered on.
Pair MiCo with a different, new VERSA
- Enter pairing on VERSA: Hold both buttons on VERSA simultaneously for 3 seconds. VERSA enters pairing mode.
- Enter pairing on MiCo: Hold the Up and Down buttons on MiCo together for 2 seconds. MiCo disconnects the current VERSA and becomes ready to pair.
- Confirmed: MiCo vibrates and announces “Paired with VERSA.”
If several MiCo or VERSA units are nearby, power on only the pair you want to connect and close the covers on all the others. This stops MiCo from pairing with the wrong VERSA — for example in a store, at an event, or when you are flying with friends.
Flight modes and controls
Follow mode (Copilot)
MiCo flies VERSA and keeps your subject framed. Use the 5-way button to change the follow distance, orbit around the subject, and capture a still while recording. Use the Up and Down buttons to raise and lower the follow altitude.
Flight limit: 15 m height and 50 m distance. VERSA will not fly beyond the limit. When you reach it, fly VERSA back towards you before continuing.
| Control | Action |
|---|---|
| 5-way Up | Fly farther — increase the follow distance |
| 5-way Down | Fly closer — decrease the follow distance |
| 5-way Left | Orbit the subject to the left |
| 5-way Right | Orbit the subject to the right |
| Centre press | Capture a still photo while recording (available in flight only) |
| Up button | Raise follow altitude |
| Down button | Lower follow altitude |
| Function button — press once before take-off | Take off |
| Function button — press again during take-off countdown | Cancel take-off |
| Function button — press twice in flight | Stop following and switch to manual control |
| Function button — hold for 2 s in flight | Return to home |
Manual mode
MiCo has no live view. It does not receive a video feed from VERSA, so Manual mode cannot be used for aerial photography.
Manual mode is there so you can fly VERSA and aim the gimbal “blind” — useful for framing shots around you, and for the fun of flying it yourself. Always keep VERSA in visual line of sight whenever you adjust the gimbal.
| Control | Action |
|---|---|
| 5-way Up | Fly forward — toward the nose |
| 5-way Down | Fly backward — toward the tail |
| 5-way Left | Translate left (VERSA’s perspective) |
| 5-way Right | Translate right (VERSA’s perspective) |
| Centre press | Start / stop recording |
| Up button | Ascend |
| Down button | Descend |
| Left slide — push up (clockwise) | Yaw right (VERSA’s perspective) |
| Left slide — push down (counter-clockwise) | Yaw left (VERSA’s perspective) |
| Right slide — push up (counter-clockwise) | Pitch up — gimbal tilts up |
| Right slide — push down (clockwise) | Pitch down — gimbal tilts down |
| Function button — press once before take-off | Take off |
| Function button — press again during take-off countdown | Cancel take-off |
| Function button — hold for 2 s in flight | Return to home |
Handheld mode
Used on its own, without VERSA, MiCo controls the camera gimbal and zoom. The centre button recentres the gimbal, the slide buttons switch between photo and video mode and trigger AI composition, and the function button takes the photo or starts and stops recording.
| Control | Action |
|---|---|
| 5-way Up | Gimbal pitch up |
| 5-way Down | Gimbal pitch down |
| 5-way Left | Gimbal yaw left |
| 5-way Right | Gimbal yaw right |
| Centre press twice | Recentre the gimbal |
| Centre press three times | Toggle the gimbal self-test |
| Up button | Zoom in |
| Down button | Zoom out |
| Left slide — push either side for 2 s | Switch between photo and video mode |
| Right slide — push either side for 2 s | Trigger AI composition (photo mode only) |
| Right slide — short push | Exit the AI composition process |
| Function button — video mode | Start / stop recording |
| Function button — photo mode | Shutter |
Yaw left/right follows the camera’s mirror setting; the control direction always matches how the gimbal moves from your point of view.
What MiCo can and cannot do
MiCo is a companion remote, not a replacement for every control on VERSA. Knowing where the line sits saves a lot of confusion.
| MiCo can | MiCo cannot |
|---|---|
| Take off, follow a subject, orbit around it, and change follow distance and altitude automatically | Show you a live video feed — MiCo has no image transmission, so it is not usable for manual aerial photography |
| Fly and steer VERSA manually, and aim the gimbal, while keeping VERSA in sight | Fly beyond the 15 m height or 50 m distance limit |
| Control the gimbal, zoom, and trigger recording or a photo when used on its own | Capture composed aerial footage on its own — use Follow mode, or control VERSA from the app, when you need the shot |
| Return VERSA home, and cancel a take-off |
Indicator lights and voice prompts
| Light | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Off | Powered off | Charge MiCo with the USB-C cable |
| Breathing blue | Connecting to the camera | Wait a few seconds |
| Flashing blue | Ready to pair | Hold the Up and Down buttons on MiCo for 2 s, then wait for “Paired with VERSA” |
| Solid green | Connected, high battery | Ready to fly |
| Solid yellow | Connected, medium battery | Fine to fly — charge MiCo soon |
| Solid red | Connected, low battery | Charge MiCo now. Connection may be lost when the battery runs out |
| Solid green (powered off) | Fully charged | Disconnect the charging cable |
| Fast flashing red | Alert — very low battery, abnormal temperature, or charging error | Stop using MiCo and charge it. If it is a charging error, unplug the cable and reconnect it |
| Alternating red and blue | Updating, or uploading logs | Keep MiCo sufficiently charged and follow the instructions in the app. Do not power off |
| Breathing red, yellow, or green (powered off) | Charging while powered off | Wait until the light turns solid green |
MiCo speaks English by default and switches to VERSA’s language once connected. If MiCo loses the connection, it vibrates and announces “Trying to reconnect.”
FAQ
Do I need to update MiCo before first use?
Yes. Update MiCo in the HOVERAir app before connecting it to VERSA for the first time. VERSA updates automatically, but MiCo does not.
How do I hold MiCo correctly?
Hold MiCo with the button side up. The antenna is on the top edge of the upper cover, on the same side as the buttons. Do not cover it with your hand.
Why does MiCo not power on?
MiCo cannot power on below 1% battery. Charge it for at least 10 minutes with the USB-C cable, then open the cover.
How do I pair MiCo with a new VERSA?
- Hold both buttons on VERSA for 3 seconds.
- Hold the Up and Down buttons on MiCo together for 2 seconds.
- Wait for MiCo to vibrate and announce “Paired with VERSA.”
Why is there no live view in Manual mode?
MiCo has no image transmission, so it does not receive a video feed from VERSA. Manual mode is for visual line-of-sight control and “blind” framing, not aerial photography.
How far can VERSA fly with MiCo?
The flight limit is 15 m height and 50 m distance. VERSA will not fly beyond this limit. Fly it back towards you before continuing.
Why do the controls move in the opposite direction?
Button mirroring may be switched on in the app. Open the app, find the button mirroring setting, and turn it off.
Why does MiCo speak a different language?
MiCo speaks English by default and switches to VERSA’s language once connected. Change the language on VERSA in the app.
